Raven’s Ruin (The Keeper Origin’s Book 2) by J.A. Andrews

What you are going to do is trust me when I say that I read the first book in this series. Perhaps if life slows down a bit I could go back a review all the books I read before this blogs inception but alas I haven’t the time right now.

As I wrote to Allison in an email just today (one day I’m sure our personal correspondence will be published as well) I’m not sure how I feel about series Fantasy. I read series for sure. But it’s like series with a lower case s. Series where each book is its own narrative arc and you can pick it up and put it down at your leisure. Examples being: The Bridgertons by Julia Quinn, or In Death by JD Robb. I struggle with these large Fantasy series where it is one contiguous narrative broken up because, I presume, you can’t bind a book that is that thick.

The second book in this series focused on our heroine Sable as she continues to fight against The Prioress. First from inside the Priory and then from outside. I like Sable. She is smart and savvy. There is a bit of a plot hole in this series. In book one we are lead to believe Sable with do anything and everything for her sisters and then in book two she is basically just like “F ‘em”. Okay. This guiding principle of your character has just been tossed aside for you new found family. Sure. I’m not sure that is actually how that works but whatever keeps the plot moving.

There is also a very random scene with Trolls and elves. I’m not entirely sure what that is going to have to do with the advancement of the plot but I sure as heck hope it does something. Or it will be 100 pages of my life that I never get back. I wish someone could recommend a really tightly written High Fantasy. I do feel like this genre more than others lends itself to bloat.

Take away: A bit of a thin soup -but still hit the spot.
